Here are the main types of camera bags that you need to know about.
Backpacks and sling bags
Backpacks and sling bags are among the most popular types of camera bags. Backpacks are high-performance bags with two shoulder straps, designed to be worn for long periods without causing discomfort. The Lowepro ProTactic BP 450 AW II Backpack is a great example, with four points of access for your DSLR or mirrorless camera, and space for lenses. There’s also a laptop compartment – a common feature for camera backpacks.
Sling bags are similar in structure to backpacks, but only have one strap instead of two. This is great for slipping on and off in a hurry, and also gives them a slimmer profile, which can be useful for city exploring. They tend to be smaller than backpacks, but also more affordable – take for instance the Peak Design Everyday Sling 3L v2, a great minimalist bag for keeping it simple. It has plenty of storage in its main compartment, as well as extra front pockets for accessories.
Other camera bag types
Shoulder bags
Worn with a single strap, shoulder bags are a great fuss-free way of carrying your photo kit and various camera accessories. They’re often designed to take a DSLR with lens attached, enabling you to quickly take it out and grab a shot – the Lowepro Adventura SH 160 II Shoulder Bag is a good example.
Rolling bags
Wheeled rolling bags are equipped with pull handles and wheels, making them easy to maneuver without having to be fully lifted. This makes them especially good for taking as hand luggage on trips – the Think Tank Airport Advantage has been designed with exactly this purpose in mind.
Hard cases
Not designed for comfort, hard cases are equipped with a hardy outer shell that protects your equipment from serious damage due to impact or falling. They’re ideal for giving yourself total peace of mind. Some, like the Peli 1510 Carry On Case with Dividers, are even designed to fit airport carry-on luggage dimensions.
Holster cases
Holster cases are great for those who like to keep things simple. There’s no real room for extra camera accessories, except perhaps a spare memory card – they’re just a way to keep your camera close to hand. Many can be clipped onto a belt or onto the strap of another bag. The Manfrotto Advanced2 Holster Small is ideal for a small mirrorless camera or compact, or even an entry-level DSLR.
Waist belts
Waist belts are a no-frills way of carrying a camera. Many form part of modular systems, allowing you to customise your carrying setup with different accessories – the Think Tank Thin Skin Belt V3.0 (S-M-L) is a good example of this.
Pouches and Cases
Pouches and cases are a small and specific type of camera case or bag. Many of them are actually designed for specific cameras or lenses, so it’s worth checking if there’s anything available for your gear! Some are also designed to fit equipment of specific dimensions, such as the Lowepro Lens Case 13 x 32cm.
Camera bag inserts and accessories
There are plenty of differentcamera bag accessories that can make your life a little easier out in the field. We’ve got everything from extra strap padsto protective wraps for extra-fragile items. If you’re an outdoor photographer, it’s also worth taking a look at our range of rain covers, for keeping water off your camera and lens while shooting.

Frequently asked questions
- How much does a camera bag cost?
-
Camera bags have a reputation for being expensive, but the truth is that there are bags to suit all budgets if you’re willing to look for them! If you’re budget-conscious, try looking at our range of holster cases or camera pouches for some low-cost options.
- What is the best camera bag to buy?
-
It depends on what you need it for! But we’ll try to give you some pointers:
- If you’re an outdoor photographer looking for something to take hiking, get a backpack.
- If you want something for city breaks or commuting with a camera, get a shoulder bag.
- If you need something no-frills and simple, get a pouch or holster.
- If you’re planning on taking a bag through airports, get a rolling bag.
- If you need the ultimate in protection, get a hard case.
But ultimately, if you’re not sure, ask! We have one of the biggest ranges of camera bags and camera cases in the UK, and our staff are happy to answer questions, whether in store or over the phone.
- Are camera bags waterproof?
-
It varies from bag to bag, but many camera bags are constructed from waterproof materials, and/or come with a rain cover that can be pulled over in the event of a sudden downpour.
- Which camera bags can be taken as carry-on luggage?
-
Many can, but not all! Manufacturers will generally specify if their bag meets airline carry-on restrictions or not, so if this is important to you then check before buying.
