The Leica SL2-S takes inspiration from the SL2 body, building from that framework but developing in certain areas. Upgrades and Developments

The SL2-S builds off the SL2 foundations with the same all-metal, German-made body, but offers a different shooting experience. The SL2-S is equipped with a redesigned 24 megapixel CMOS-BSI full-frame sensor. This sensor has been designed for enhanced low-light performance. It has larger pixels which will take in more light and have a higher dynamic range. This allows for an increased ISO range from 50-100000 making this camera ideal for night-time shooting. In addition to this, the SL2-S has a faster max electronic shutter of 25fps, 9fps with the mechanical shutter, all of which has a fast 4GB internal buffer memory.

AutoFocus Performance

Leica is well known for its incredible autofocus systems and they weren't going to stop with the SL2-S. In fact, they've provided an enhanced autofocus focus performance with their Object Detection AF system. This system works incredibly quickly to calculate the distance from your subject and camera, and will automatically adjust the focus position with sensor and lens communication which occurs at up to 480 fps. This type of contrast-detection autofocus lends itself to both the SL2-S's still and video modes, and the subject tracking thanks to a body-detection mode. In addition to this, the SL2-S has 225 selectable autofocus areas for complete control of what you want the camera to focus on.

Leica Video

The SL2 has some fantastic video features and this has been carried over to the SL2-S but with some tweaks. The SL2-S offers up to 4K at 30p 10bit 4:2:2 / C4k at 30p10bit 4:2:2 (internal) up to 4K at 60p 10bit 4:2:2 / C4k at 60p 10bit 4:2:2 (via HDMI), all with an unlimited recording limit. As well as this, the SL2-S offers high-speed recording for UHD 4K60 with 30 fps playback, and Full HD 180 fps with 30 fps playback, offering 2x and 6x slower motion, respectively. To accompany this incredible video quality the SL2-S features a dedicated Hybrid Log-Gamma (HLG) Photo Style mode as well as L-Log gamma profile, both of which offer more flexibly when you're colour grading in post. Also, you can make use of the HDMI Type A port and record to an external recorder and use the dedicate 3.5mm jacks for external microphones and headphones.

The Long-Awaited IBIS

A feature that has been wanted amongst many Leica users is IBIS - In-body Image Stabilisation. This is where Leica and Panasonic share technology. The SL2-S adopts the very same, extremely powerful and impressive 5-axis sensor-shift image stabilisation found in the likes of high-end Panasonic mirrorless cameras. This industry-leading technology offers tack-sharp handheld precision with the use of a 5-axis sensor-shift image stabilisation compensation system. This is can be utilised in both stills and video work and will further emphasise the incredible quality of the lenses that you will be using with this camera body.

To further utilise this sensor-shift stabilisation tech, you can make use of the SL2-S's multishot mode. This mode capture and put together eight separate images to create a single and compile eight separate exposure to create a single 187MP raw or JPEG file. You can use this mode to create incredibly detailed images with an ultra-high colour accuracy; way higher and more detailed than any single image could capture.

EVF & LCD

To view the stunning images and videos that the SL2-S can capture, you need an advanced EVF and LCD screen, both for capturing and reviewing your images. The SL2-S features a truly incredible EyeRes Electronic View Finder (EVF) with a high-resolution 5.76m-dot OLED. This offers a 0.78x configurable viewing magnification with a smooth 120 fps refresh rate, 0.005 sec lag, and 10,000:1 contrast ratio. Once you've looked through this EVF, all others will pale in comparison.

When it comes to the rear LCD, the SL2-S features a large 3.2" 2.1m-dot touchscreen LCD which is bright and clear which is perfect for live-view but also for playback video/images and navigating the menu system. It's also made from Gorilla Glass for added durability and scratch/crack resistance. As well as this rear LCD, there's also a 1.28" top status LCD which is designed for quick settings checks, and this presents those same setting even when the camera is powered off.

Designed for Convenience

The SL2-S body has been designed with you in mind. It is equipped with dual UHS-II compatible SD card slots which offer flexible storage options, allowing for large cards and for segregating file types, saving duplicates or doubling your storage space for overflow recording. The decision to use SD UHS-II cards means that can switch between cameras e.g. for an A and a B camera setup. Power-wise, the SL2-S uses the same Leica BP-SCL4 rechargeable lithium-ion battery as the SL2 but, on this camera, the battery will provide up to approximately 510 shots per charge.

The body has been upgraded with an improved weather sealing rating of IPX54, offering spash, dust and freeze resistance. The shell is made from a magnesium-alloy for added durability and features other design features which add to its durability such as a magnet-driven top dial.

Adding to its versatility and convenience to you, the user, the SL2-S has a built-in Wi-Fi function that can be used in conjunction with Leica's FOTOS app for Android and iOS devices. This allows for easy and instant sharing of your images directly to a linked device as well as offering remote control and a live view of what your camera sees. As well as Wi-Fi, the SL2-S has a secure and stable Bluetooth LE connectivity, too.

What resolution will the multi-shot feature produce images at?

When all eight images are put together, you'll have an image with a 16736 x 11168-pixel resolution.

Does the SL2-S have image stabilisation?

Yes, it certainly does. It uses the same sensor-shift technology that is used in the Panasonic S1R.
