So, there are a few angles here, but knowing what you’re using your microphone for is by far the best place to begin. You can research the types of microphones such as condensers or dynamic microphones, but we think that depending on what you’re going to be recording, along with where you’re going to be recording (recording conditions), is going to greatly influence what will be the most suitable microphone for your purposes. We’ve split our microphones into a range of different use cases that you’ll see at the top and bottom of this page - these should help narrow down the options!
As always, you’ll also need to think about your budget. Budget will dictate the options you have. But, depending on what you are recording, your audience and how your audio is most likely to be consumed - it may not be so much of an issue. Now, of course, there are the technical aspects to consider such as polar pattern/directionality, impedance and maximum sound pressure level. For the ins and outs of this jargon and more, head on over to our Microphone Buying Guide.
