With a variable-aperture optical design for FX-format cameras, the Nikon Z 24-105mm f4-7.1 lens positions itself as an entry-level zoom covering wide-angle to short-telephoto ranges. The 12-element construction with ED and aspherical elements maintains resolution through the zoom range while internal focusing supports fast, quiet autofocus. A 0.2m minimum focus at 24mm supports close-up framing at longer focal lengths, within a compact 350g body with a customisable control ring.

What’s new?

The Nikon Z 24-105mm f4-7.1 introduces a full-frame standard zoom positioned as an accessible entry point within the Z-mount lineup. Unlike earlier kit-style lenses, it extends reach to 105mm while retaining a compact optical layout, combining a 12-element design with ED and aspherical elements to maintain resolution across the zoom range. Internal focusing enables faster, quieter autofocus response and supports closer focusing, delivering up to 0.5x magnification at longer focal lengths.

Operationally, the lens adds a customisable control ring and close-focus capability that were not typical of earlier entry zooms. The lightweight 350g build and compact barrel improve balance on smaller Z bodies, while shared 67mm filter compatibility simplifies system setup. Together, these refinements mark a practical step forward for Nikon’s starter full-frame zoom offerings.

Optical design and zoom range

The lens uses a 12-element, 10-group optical formula incorporating one ED and two aspherical elements. This architecture controls chromatic aberration and distortion as focal length changes, producing consistent resolution from 24mm through 105mm. The variable f4-7.1 aperture extends the zoom range while keeping the lens physically compact. In use, this design supports landscapes at the wide end and compressed framing for portraits and detail shots at longer focal lengths.

Autofocus and close focusing

An internal focusing system drives autofocus without extending the lens barrel. This architecture produces fast, quiet focus behaviour, which is beneficial when working close to subjects or recording video. A minimum focus distance of 0.2m at 24mm allows exaggerated perspective and foreground emphasis, while longer focal lengths reach a 0.5x reproduction ratio. The result is greater flexibility for detail photography without switching to a dedicated macro lens.

Handling and control

At 350g, the lens maintains a balanced feel on both FX and DX Nikon Z bodies. The compact barrel reduces fatigue during extended handheld use and is well-suited to travel and everyday photography. A customisable control ring can be assigned to aperture, ISO or exposure compensation, allowing direct adjustment without moving the hand from the lens. The rounded 7-blade diaphragm supports smooth background rendering when isolating subjects.

Format compatibility and system use

Designed for FX format, the lens fully covers full-frame sensors while remaining compatible with DX bodies, where it provides a tighter effective field of view. This dual compatibility allows users to move between formats without replacing lenses. A standard 67mm filter thread supports common accessories such as ND or polarising filters, maintaining consistency across a compact Nikon Z kit.

FAQs:

Is the Nikon Z 24-105mm f4-7.1 suitable for close-up photography?

The lens focuses as close as 0.2m at 24mm and reaches up to 0.5x magnification between 70-105mm. This close-focusing architecture allows detailed framing of small subjects without additional accessories. It is beneficial for lifestyle details, food, or travel close-ups.

Can this lens be used on DX-format Nikon Z cameras?

Yes. While designed for FX format, it is fully compatible with DX Nikon Z bodies. On DX cameras, the field of view becomes narrower, effectively shifting the usable range toward short-telephoto coverage. This makes it suitable for portraits and detail work on APS-C bodies.

Does the Nikon Z 24-105mm f4-7.1 use an STM autofocus motor?

Yes. The lens uses an STM stepping motor to drive autofocus, delivering smooth, precise focus movements with reduced mechanical noise. This benefits video recording by minimising audible focus noise and visible focus stepping. It also supports reliable subject acquisition for stills, particularly when shooting in quieter environments.

Does the lens support filters and accessories?

The lens features a 67mm front filter thread, supporting common screw-in filters. Optional accessories include the HB-93B lens hood and CL-C1 case. Using standard filter sizes simplifies sharing accessories across other compact Nikon Z lenses.

Where does this lens sit within the Nikon Z lineup?

The 24-105mm f4-7.1 serves as an entry-level full-frame zoom, offering broader reach than basic kit lenses. Its design prioritises portability and flexibility over constant-aperture performance. This positioning makes it a practical starting point for photographers entering the FX Z system.
