How to use the Nikon Z 28-135mm f4 PZ Lens
Shoot high-resolution video with premium optics
The Nikon Z 28-135mm f4 PZ features a complex optical construction with 18 elements in 13 groups, incorporating ED, aspherical, and ED aspherical elements to minimise chromatic aberrations and distortion across the zoom range. A constant f4 aperture ensures consistent exposure control, while the 9-blade diaphragm delivers smooth, natural bokeh. Nikon's Meso Amorphous Coat enhances contrast and clarity, significantly reducing ghosting and flare from strong light sources. Engineered for professional video production, its optical design maintains high resolving power, ensuring sharp, detailed 8K footage with exceptional clarity, even when downsampled to 4K.
Optimise handling for video production
As the first Z-series power zoom (PZ) lens, Nikon has optimised the 28-135mm f4 PZ for cinematic precision. The yellow ring distinguishes it as a dedicated video lens, and Nikon’s refined ergonomics enhance handling for extended shooting sessions. The zoom, focus, and control rings are customisable, with distinct knurling patterns allowing tactile identification without looking away from the monitor or EVF. The ergonomically positioned zoom lever also enables precise, controlled zoom adjustments at waist or shoulder height, ensuring stable operation for handheld, gimbal, and rig-based shooting.
Leverage advanced video functions to maximise precision
With 11 levels of motorised zoom speed, the Z 28-135mm f4 PZ lens allows for incremental zoom control without needing external motors. Focus breathing suppression ensures consistent framing during focus transitions, simulating parfocal behaviour. Additionally, Synchro support enables seamless integration with Power Zoom and Hi-Res Zoom functions on compatible Nikon Z cameras, extending the effective zoom range to 28-270mm in 4K. The lens also features position record and recall, allowing users to reframe scenes precisely between takes.
Integrate seamlessly with rigs and support systems
Nikon has included an industry-standard 0.8M focus ring gear pitch, ensuring seamless compatibility with matte boxes and follow focus systems for precise manual focus control in rigged setups. An internal zoom motor maintains a stable centre of gravity, shifting just 2mm from wide to telephoto, making the lens highly suited for gimbal and rig-based shooting. With comprehensive weather sealing, it is protected against dust, moisture, and dirt, while Nikon’s fluorine coating repels contaminants for easy cleaning of the front element.
