Netflix Approved

Netflix has strict regulations and standards of any video camera that is used in their productions, furthermore, of any video footage that is sent to them. The list of Netflix-approved cameras is dominated by pro-video cameras from the likes of RED and ARRI cameras - until now. As discussed on the CineD news blog, Panasonic's S1H is the first and only mirrorless camera that's video quality has to been approved for use on Netflix original productions. It's high-quality programming and internal recording capabilities make it a perfect A-Camera for a budget 4K filmmaker or even for use as a high-quality B-Camera alongside a high-end cinema camera.

Professional Tool for High-End Filmmaking

The 24.2-megapixel 35mm full-frame CMOS imaging sensor (35.6mm x 23.8mm) can capture 6K video as well as still images of 6,024 x 4,016 pixels. The user can enjoy 6k/24p, 5.4K/30p (3:2 aspect ratio) or 5.9K/30p (16.9 aspect ratio) high resolution capture. It can also record 10-bit 60p 4K/C4K HEVC video provided that the image area is equivalent to Super 35mm. The camera performs well in low light with minimal noise thanks to the optimal signal processing provided by the Venus Engine. It ensures a max ISO of 51200. Another benefit of the Dual-Native ISO is that directors of photography can work with less light on set which saves precious production time. In addition to this, the Dual-Native ISOs are 640 and 4000 allowing cinematographers to film in most lighting conditions. The user is also empowered to create time-lapses within the camera body that is capable of 4K 60p/50p capture.

Body I.S.

The S1H incorporates a powerful image stabilisation system which can account for most types of camera shakes and works with both photo and video modes. This includes 4K, 6K, and anamorphic capture. The user has the freedom to record 6.5-stop longer shutter speeds when the Body I.S. (5-axis Image Stabilisation), and Dual I.S. 2 is combined with the O.I.S (2-axis Optical Image Stabiliser) found in the LUMIX S Series lenses. This comes in particularly handy when shooting with telephoto lenses, in low lit scenarios or during hand-held recording.

High Dynamic Range

This camera body features an impressive 14+ stops of dynamic range, similarly to Panasonic Cinema Cameras, that accurately reproduce detail from dark to bright areas. This applies to both still image and video. The user can record the image just as it is seen with the human eye, in the moment. The V-Log/V-Gamut capture provides users with a broad colour range as well as a high dynamic range for accurate colour capture with rich skin tones. Thanks to the V-Log, that renders flat images to retain max colour and brightness information, the user can accomplish superior flexibility during post-production. The V-Gamut captures a wide colour gamut that is the optimum colour space wider than BT.2020.

Variable Frame Rate

Users can capture over-cranked and under-cranked VFR (Variable Frame Rate) C4K/4K (60fps, maximum 2.5x slow motion in 24p) video, alternatively, FHD (180fps, maximum 7.5x slow motion in 24p). Two frames per seconds (2fps) is the minimum frame rate for quick motion video. Active autofocus aids the recording of High Frame Rate (HFR) video with sound. There is also a wide variety of effects for post-production slow motion.

Ideal for Photographers as well as Videographers

The Lumix S1H produces stunning photographs in 14-bit RAW format featuring an accurate reproduction of colour, tone, and detail. Thanks to the 24.2 high-res imaging sensor the user can enjoy High Resolution Mode that captures the smallest details in stunningly realistic RAW or JPEG outputs. This mode is perfect for landscape and fine art photography or any other stationary subject when using a tripod. There is also a Motion Blur function within the High Resolution menu which means that this mode can also be utilised for moving elements. The Advanced AI Technology is ideal for fast subject tracking, such as fast-moving animals, making this camera very versatile when it comes to choosing the subject of the photograph. Possibilities are truly endless and in addition to the aforementioned landscape photography, it can also be used for portraits as the face/eye detection technology can even detect and autofocus on the eye's pupil.

High-Speed Autofocus

Thanks to the combination of the lens and the sensor being able to communicate at extremely fast speeds of maximum 480fps, Contrast AF and DFD technology the camera achieves ultra-high speeds with excellent accuracy autofocus of approx. 0.08 seconds. The camera performs well in low lit conditions thanks to the -6EV luminance detection performance with Low Light AF. The autofocus is also fantastic for subject tracking and includes face/eye detection technology so that the user can capture people and their individuality in perfect, crisp detail. Thanks to the Advanced AI Technology fast-moving animals can also be beautifully photographed.

Burst Mode

Nine frames per second (AFS) high-speed burst shooting or six frames per second (AFC) is possible. 6K PHOTO feature allows users to shoot at 30fps whereas 4K PHOTO offers 60fps. Its intelligent design extracts the frame with the best timing out of the 6K burst file and saves it as an 18-megapixel equivalent high-resolution photo. There are three modes to choose from including 6K Burst/4K Burst, 6K Burst (Start/Stop)/4K Burst (Start/Stop) and 6K Pre-burst/4K Pre-burst. It is up to the user to pick the most suitable one for their needs depending on the situation.

L-Mount System

Photographers have plenty of lens options thanks to the integrated L-Mount that works with over 45 L-Mount interchangeable lenses. This includes over a dozen of LUMIX S/S PRO lenses that will be available form Panasonic, Leica, and SIGMA by the end of 2020. The S1H camera body can be a long-time photographic companion as the L-Mount ensures compatibility with the future-proof range of products. Bluetooth/WiFi and LUMIX Apps

The continuous connection between the camera and a smartphone/tablet is available with minimal power consumption. Thanks to this the camera settings can be copied and transmitted onto other S1H cameras.
