The Monochrome Photography Concept

To optimise the quality of monochromatic images, the Pentax K-3 Mark III Monochrome Digital SLR incorporates a monochrome-specific, APS-C-format CMOS image sensor with approximately 25.73 effective megapixels. Since the release of the original K-3 Mark III, Pentax has re-evaluated image quality and optimised the imaging characteristics of the new monochrome-specific image sensor to deliver highly-sensitive expression with a natural bokeh (defocus) effect, rich gradation and extra-fine sharpness.

With this dedication to the monochrome photography concept, Pentax has also included three Custom Image modes to provide distinctive finishing touches. In addition to the Standard mode, this SLR provides Hard Mode and Soft Mode to provide greater contrast control. This dedication extends throughout the entire body of the camera, including a white backlight illumination on the LCD data panel, Monochrome lettering printed on the upper-left shoulder of the back panel, menu screen features with a black-and-white visual scheme, icons printed on buttons in three shades of grey, and more.

Accurate & Versatile

The K-3 Mark III features the advanced technology needed to capture beautifully striking images and videos in a compact and lightweight build, perfect for travel photographers and videographers. Thanks to the intelligent 5-axis sensor-shift shake reduction "SR II" IBIS, the Pentax K-3 Mark III Monochrome Digital SLR provides users with up to 5.5 steps of compensation - significantly reducing camera shake in stills and video capture. This feature is perfect for those working out on location and capturing content on the fly.

Adding to this SLR’s versatility is a newly designed phase-matching autofocus system that offers fast and accurate subject tracking, even when using the K-3 Mark III’s fast continuous shooting speeds. Thanks to its SAFOX 13 focusing sensor, the Pentax K-3 Mark III Monochrome Digital SLR is well-equipped with 101 individual focus points and 25 cross-type focus points - so you’ll never lose your subject in the frame.

AA Filter Simulator

Brought to us in the original K-3 camera body and seen throughout this series is one of the world’s first AA filter simulation systems. This simulation technology recreates the effects of an optical AA filter by applying microscopic vibrations to the CMOS imaging sensor during exposure for significantly reduced moiré.

The Optical Viewfinder

This newly designed optical viewfinder (OVF) sees an improvement over the K-3 II body by providing an approximately 1.05x angle of view (previously approx. 0.95) which is equal to that of a full-frame model. To achieve this, Pentax designed a high-refraction glass pentaprism that increased the viewfinder magnification without compromising eye relief.

The improvements don’t stop there. In addition to the newly developed magnification, Pentax has updated the viewfinder display system by optimising the viewfinder optics and prism with specially designed coatings that significantly reduce colour tinting, reflections and distortions within the system. Thanks to these optical corrections, the K-3 III improves both viewfinder image quality and user experience.

Shutter Upgrades

Adopting the three-leaf switch mechanism featured in Pentax 645Z and K-1 series, Pentax relieves the anxiety of unexpected or accidental shutter releases. The three-leaf switch provides just the right amount of pressure and depth to avoid applying excessive force. This feature is incredibly beneficial as it helps stabilise the camera when the shutter is released and makes for effortless continuous shooting without fear of shutter failures.

Ergonomics & Ease-of-Use

The goal of the K-3 III was to develop a camera that allows you to concentrate on your shots without working out the rest of the camera. As a result, the K-3 III features some differences in shape and ergonomics, including an optimised grip shape and control layout to provide maximum comfort and ease of use.

With a focus on viewfinder shooting, the K-3 III also features a high-quality fixed-type touch LCD panel. During development, Pentax decided to prioritise the compactness and sturdiness of the K-3 III body to avoid the often bulky articulated LCD mechanisms seen on other models - leaving the K-3 III with an overall reduced body size and internal structure.
