What's new?

The Ricoh GR IV 30th Anniversary Edition celebrates three decades since the launch of the Ricoh GR1 film camera in October 1996, with production limited to 6,000 units worldwide. Its GR1-inspired design combines dark silver shutter and rear buttons with a diamond-cut GN-3 (30th) ring cap whose reflective surfaces remain concealed while shooting, plus an exclusive anniversary power-off screen. The kit adds a commemorative metal hot shoe cover, a GS-4 (30th) genuine leather finger strap with a black exterior and light grey lining, a standard black GN-3 ring cap and a set of 16 pin badges representing 14 GR models alongside GR and 30th-anniversary designs.

The anniversary edition retains the original GR IV's specifications, including its 25.74MP APS-C CMOS sensor, GR Engine 7 image processor, and redesigned 18.3mm f2.8 GR lens. Hybrid autofocus combines phase-detection and contrast-detection systems, while 5-axis Shake Reduction provides up to six stops of stabilisation in the centre of the frame. It also supports 14-bit RAW recording, Full HD video and GR WORLD app connectivity while maintaining the compact dimensions and responsive operation associated with the GR series.

Precision-engineered GR lens

The Ricoh GR IV features a newly developed 18.3mm f2.8 GR lens, delivering a classic 28mm equivalent angle of view in the 35mm format. Its optical construction features seven elements in five groups, including glass-moulded aspherical lens elements, a large-diameter element as the final lens, and high-refraction, low-dispersion elements. This design minimises distortion and chromatic aberration while maintaining edge-to-edge sharpness and strong contrast for high-resolution imaging.

Designed for high-resolution imaging

The GR IV uses a back-illuminated APS-C CMOS sensor with approximately 25.7 effective megapixels, paired with the GR Engine 7 imaging processor. Together with Ricoh's dedicated accelerator unit, this system optimises the sensor's high signal-to-noise-ratio image data, reproducing rich gradation while reducing noise at higher sensitivity settings. With sensitivity up to ISO 204800, photographers can keep shooting in low light while retaining fine detail.

Advanced Shake Reduction for smooth results

Ricoh's SR Shake Reduction mechanism has been refined for the GR IV, providing five-axis sensor-shift stabilisation. Compensating for pitch, yaw, roll, and horizontal and vertical shift, the system provides up to six stops of correction in the centre of the frame and four stops towards the edges (measured under 2024 CIPA standards). This supports handheld shooting at slower shutter speeds while reducing the effects of camera movement.

Rapid AF for high-speed shooting

Alongside fast autofocus performance, the GR IV improves its start-up sequence for quicker operation. A redesigned lens barrel and optimised start-up process give the camera a start-up time of approximately 0.6 seconds, the fastest in GR series history. Combined with a high-speed lens drive and rapid sensor readout, the hybrid autofocus system delivers fast, precise focusing, including in low-light conditions. Switching to macro mode is also quicker for responsive close-range shooting.

Quick settings and new Cinema mode for creative control

The GR IV offers a range of exposure modes for different subjects and shooting approaches. In Program AE, the Program Auto Ex function lets you switch instantly between aperture and shutter priority by rotating the control dials. Snap Distance-Priority AE offers another way to control depth of field using preset focusing distances.

Cinema Image Control mode offers yellow and green variations for film-inspired colour treatments. Saturation, Hue, Key, Contrast, and Grain can be adjusted alongside Grain Strength and Grain Size, allowing you to refine the look for individual images. You can also save additional configurations as custom Image Control settings.

Compact and functional with a 3-inch LCD monitor

The GR IV's body has been redesigned to balance compact dimensions with comfortable handling. Constructed from lightweight magnesium alloy, its slimmer profile helps maintain the portability associated with the GR series, while a newly contoured thumb grip provides a secure hold. Controls and dials have also been repositioned, replacing the previous adjustment lever with a dial for more direct exposure adjustments. On the connectivity side, dual Bluetooth and wireless LAN connectivity support communication with smartphones, tablets and computers. Through the GR WORLD smartphone app, compatible smart devices can be used for image transfer, remote shutter release and geotagging.

The 3-inch LCD monitor provides approximately 1,037,000 dots for detailed image viewing and composition. Its air-gapless construction places a special resin layer between the touch panel and reinforced glass cover to reduce reflections and light dispersion. Outdoor Monitor Setting further adjusts screen brightness to suit bright exterior conditions and darker indoor environments.

FAQs:

What makes the Ricoh GR IV 30th Anniversary Edition different from the standard GR IV?

The 30th Anniversary Edition retains the imaging specifications of the standard GR IV but introduces several exclusive cosmetic details and accessories inspired by the original GR1. These include dark silver controls, a diamond-cut GN-3 (30th) ring cap and an anniversary power-off screen. The kit also contains a commemorative metal hot shoe cover, GS-4 (30th) genuine leather finger strap and a 16-piece pin badge set.

What is included in the 30th Anniversary pin badge set?

The special pin badge set contains 16 badges. Fourteen represent GR camera models released throughout the series' history. The remaining two feature the 30th-anniversary logo and the GR logo and are exclusive to the anniversary kit.

What are the dimensions and weight of the Ricoh GR IV?

The Ricoh GR IV measures approximately 109.4 x 61.1 x 32.7mm (W x H x D), excluding operating controls and protrusions. The lens section measures approximately 31.3mm deep and the body section approximately 24.5mm deep. The camera weighs 262g with the battery and microSD memory card, or 228g for the body alone.

What storage options does the Ricoh GR IV have?

The Ricoh GR IV features approximately 53GB of internal memory, providing substantial built-in storage for a compact digital camera. It also supports UHS-I microSD, microSDHC, and microSDXC memory cards to expand storage when needed.

How does the Ricoh GR IV handle dust on the sensor?

The GR IV has the DR II dust-removal system, which combines ultrasonic vibration with an anti-stain and antistatic coating on the UV/IR-cut filter. This approach helps prevent particles from adhering to the sensor assembly while removing accumulated dust. It reduces the likelihood of dust becoming visible in photographs.

Can I customise the controls on the Ricoh GR IV Digital Camera?

The Ricoh GR IV provides extensive control customisation. Depending on the selected shooting mode, you can assign functions to the ADJ dial, Fn button, front and rear e-dials, and exposure compensation button. This lets you place commonly used settings on the controls that best suit your preferred approach.

What is the battery performance of the Ricoh GR IV Digital Camera?

Powered by the DB-120 rechargeable lithium-ion battery, the GR IV captures approximately 250 still images on a full charge under CIPA testing conditions. It also provides approximately 240 minutes of playback time. Actual battery life varies according to shooting conditions and camera settings.
