How To Use The Sony A1 II Digital Camera Body
Second Generation of the Flagship A1
The Sony A1 II takes the outstanding speed and resolution of the Sony A1 and improves its performance by integrating a new AI processing unit for enhanced real-time recognition AF. The A1 II shares its 50 MP resolution, Exmor RS stacked CMOS sensor, and BIONZ XR processing engine with the A1, with upgrades to ISO performance. Image stabilisation has been upgraded to offer 8.5-stop central and 7.0-stop peripheral compensation with heightened precision. Subject recognition and autofocus are now faster and more accurate when shooting stills thanks to the new AI Processing Unit, with a 30% improvement in human eye recognition, 30% improvement in animal eye recognition, 50% improvement in bird eye recognition, and more. New modes have also been introduced on the A1 II for better stabilisation when shooting video handheld.
This professional camera also has Pre-Capture and Continous Shooting Speed Boost for more advanced high-speed shooting options. S-Log3 recording and other video features have been enhanced, with the addition of advanced filmmaking features for improved results. It has an upgraded 4-axis monitor and EVF, and the design has a more ergonomic grip and buttons. You can also enjoy faster charging with the new quick charger supplied with the camera. Other notable updates include a dedicated microphone, broad connectivity, greater accessibility, and more.
Access Unmatched Image Quality
The Sony A1 II delivers unmatched image quality, incorporating upgrades on the Sony A1 to deliver consistently high-resolution images. With a 50.1-megapixel Exmor RS stacked CMOS sensor and powerful BIONZ XR image processing engine, it has an ISO of 100-32000, expandable to ISO 50-102400. The advanced technology ensures breathtaking images with reduced noise, even at mid to high sensitivities, without sacrificing detail. Consistently accurate exposure and colours alongside 15 stops of dynamic range ensure true-to-life results.
To support a wide range of shooting scenarios, an upgraded image stabilisation system with 8.5-stop central and 7.0-stop peripheral compensation incorporates more precise detection and improved synchronisation between body and lens for smooth, sharp photos free of camera shake, even in low light or when using slower shutter speeds.
200 MP Resolution with Two New Composite RAW Functions
Composite RAW functions allow you to capture multiple images, which you can merge to create high-resolution stills in 200 MP or reduce noise. New NR Shooting Settings borrowed from the Sony A9 III let you achieve excellent quality with low noise even at higher ISO settings using 4 to 32 RAW photos. Pixel Shift Multi Shooting captures 4 or 16 pixel-shifted images later composited on a PC for higher resolution in a single frame. The Pixel Shift Multi Shooting has been upgraded on the A1 II to respond to changing conditions.
Capture High-Speed Subjects in Sharp Clarity
Sony’s Fast Hybrid AF system combines speed and premium tracking performance to capture even the most unpredictable subjects. A high-density 759-point phase-detection AF covers around 92% of the image area for effective high-coverage tracking. New XL and XS focus area spot sizes and custom focus areas provide more flexible focus area settings for increased precision. Autofocus even works in low light down to -4.0 EV.
The A1 II also offers up to 30 fps blackout-free shooting with AF/AE tracking at the full 50.1 MP resolution for stunning images of fast-moving subjects. With a new Continuous Shooting Speed Boost and Pre-Capture feature without cropping or change in the resolution that you can set from 0.03 to 1 second, both allow you to capture the perfect frame in RAW or JPEG, to capture those fleeting moments, even when you almost miss them.
Enjoy Fast, AI-Powered Subject Recognition
Thanks to the Sony A1 II’s best-in-class Real-Time AF and new AI Processing Unit, subject recognition and processing performance have improved beyond the previous generation. Upgraded human eye, animal eye, and bird eye recognition assist you in capturing your subject clearly, whether shooting portraits or wildlife. The camera supports Animal, Bird, Car/Train, and Airplane recognition for more accurate tracking even from a distance. The new ‘AUTO’ mode lets you quickly shoot various subjects, recognising them without changing settings.
Record 8K Cinema-Quality Video
Taking video performance to the next level, the Sony A1 II can capture 8K video up to 30p with 8.6K oversampling for exceptional resolution that is ideal for creators. For higher frame rates, it also features 4K up to 120p 4:2:2 10-bit video alongside 240p full HD video. Recording with S-Log3 for maximum post-production flexibility has been upgraded. You can more easily match the recordings with the output from CineAlta cameras such as VENICE and BURANO for professional-level results. For a more efficient editing process, S-Cinetone offers cinematic colour straight out of the camera, eliminating the need for grading. Additionally, you can import up to 16 custom LUTs to create a cohesive look directly in-camera. It also incorporates new advanced filmmaking-focused features inherited from the Sony A9 III, such as Auto Framing, Soft Skin Effect, Movie Self-Timer, Breathing Compensation, and more.
With specially-tailored Real-Time Recognition AF for movies and image stabilisation modes, you can always enjoy sharp video without camera shake, even when recording handheld. A new addition to the A1 II is the ability to select an AF target from Auto, Human, Animal, Bird, Car, Train, and Airplane to ensure your desired subject is always in sharp focus. For sharper results when shooting handheld, Sony equipped the A1 II with further movement compensation in the form of Active Mode stabilisation, new Dynamic active Mode with added electronic stabilisation and a Framing stabiliser.
Achieve Seamless Professional Workflows
The Sony A1 II meets the demands of professionals, supporting efficiency and expandability. A dedicated microphone for voice memos enables you to record clearer audio of metadata to still images, making communication between photographers and editors easier. You can also enjoy seamless search and playback in-camera with dual SDXC/CFexpress Type A memory card slots. Auto-marking the first image in burst or Pre-Capture groups ensures straightforward navigation and retrieval of your work, improving upon its predecessor, the A1. Photojournalists will benefit from up to 20 IPTC internal presets, which are switchable in-camera or via the RCT app.
Most notably, the A1 II offers rapid connectivity options for professionals, including a new 2.5GBASE-T wired LAN option for fast and stable transfer of both movies and still data up to 2.5Gbps. Built-in Wi-Fi with 2x2 MIMO enables high-speed wireless 5 GHz communication, or you can use USB Type-C with SuperSpeed USB 10 Gbps to transfer to a PC or mobile device. There are also multiple options for data transfer to an FTP server, including wired and wireless LAN and USB tethering with a smartphone. There are flexible transfer options, including up to 10 user-defined settings that are easily accessible and ideal when working under time constraints, streamlining the process of creating and delivering content.
Shoot Comfortably with a Multi-Angle LCD Monitor and Impressive EVF
Sony’s A1 II offers an unparalleled shooting experience thanks to its upgraded monitor and EVF. Another feature borrowed from the Sony A9 II is the A1 II’s 4-axis multi-angle LCD monitor, an upgrade from the A1’s rear tilting touchscreen. The screen is a 3.2-type, approximately 2.1 million dot panel that offers clear viewing and maximum flexibility in positioning. It pairs well with the high-performance 9.44 million dot OLED electronic viewfinder with a deep eyecup for maximum comfort.
Take On Challenging Conditions Thanks to a Sustainable, User-Friendly Design
The Sony A1 II incorporates various features to ensure seamless operability and reliable long-term performance even in challenging conditions. Its redesigned ergonomic grip provides a better hold and easier access to the shutter button. A new C5 button and selection dial also offer better operation. The A1 II also has improved customisation, including accessibility-focused options, with ‘My Menu’ for registering items that suit your needs and new elements such as a screen reader and enlarged menu display.
To ensure long-term use in various environments, the A1 II has a robust build. The top, front and rear covers and internal frame are lightweight, durable magnesium alloy. It is sustainably made using Sony’s SORPLAS material with recyclable, plastic-free packaging and plant-based fabric for product bags. The camera is dust and moisture-resistant with an anti-dust system for safe use in challenging weather. Equipped with effective heat dissipation, it protects the internal components in your camera from overheating, allowing you to shoot in more demanding conditions worry-free.
