The Sony mirrorless range itself is split into two main categories.
The headline-grabbers are the full-frame Sony Alpha cameras, designed for professional users and serious enthusiasts. These cameras have different specialities and are built for different purposes – let’s quickly look at some of the top examples.
Sony A7R IV: The Sony A7R series are the high-resolution members of the family, boasting huge megapixel counts for the ultimate in detail.
Sony A7S III: The A7S series are famous for two things – cutting-edge video, and incredible low-light capabilities. With extraordinary ISO ceilings, they can quite literally see in the dark.
Sony A7 III: The original A7 range is still going strong. These cameras are designed as high-end all-rounders and are great for hybrid photo/video content creators.
Sony A9 II: The sports specialist, with high burst rates and a huge shooting buffer.
Sony A1: The incredible new mirrorless flagship, pairing high resolution with super speeds. This really is the camera that does it all!
These full-frame cameras work with Sony FE camera lenses (which stands for full-frame E-mount).
Sony APS-C mirrorless cameras
Sony’s A6000 range of smaller, more affordable APS-C mirrorless cameras are hugely popular among enthusiast photographers. While they don’t have the big sensor of the full-frame models, they’ve carved out a niche of their own, with fast burst speeds and sophisticated autofocus systems.
Sony A6600: This powerful, capable shooter is designed to marry high-quality images with super-fast autofocus speeds – it’s able to lock onto a subject in as little as 0.02 seconds!
Sony A6400: Another super-fast shooter, the Sony A6400 also benefits from Sony’s ground-breaking Eye AF technology, which is amazing for portraits.
Sony A6100: An excellent enthusiast’s camera, blending high-quality stills with 4K movies, as well as the speed the A6000 series is famous for.
Sony A6000: While this is an older camera, it’s still a terrific fast shooter, and is one of the best-value cameras available right now. A fantastic budget option.
These cameras all accept E-mount lenses. You can use Sony FE lenses on these cameras as well, just bear in mind that the smaller sensors will increase the lens’ effective focal length by about 1.5x. So a 50mm lens will behave like a 75mm lens.
Sony compact cameras
The Sony Cyber-shot range of compact cameras is broad, designed to tempt a huge swathe of photographers with models of different types and sizes. Whether you want a pocketable compact with shooting power, a simple point-and-shoot, or a bridge camera with a big zoom, the Sony compact cameras available will have something to offer.
Sony RX10 IV: These big-zoom bridge cameras have incredible zoom lenses to bring distant objects into sharp focus. The Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* 24-600mm lens on this Mark IV model has amazing reach, and the camera also offers internal 4K video capture.
Sony Cyber-Shot RX100 VII: The RX100 range has hit on a winning formula – small bodies with high-quality 1-inch sensors. This seventh iteration delivers a long lens and a powerful drive mode for burst shooting.
Sony Vlog ZV-1: A powerful option for YouTubers and vloggers, the Sony ZV-1 can shoot pristine 4K, and features a directional 3-capsule mic and wind-shield for superior audio quality.
Sony HX99: A pocket-friendly travel compact, this affordable camera is designed to be taken everywhere with you.
There are plenty more on offer, so make sure to check out the whole range of Sony compacts!

Frequently asked questions
- Do Sony cameras have Wi-Fi?
-
Yes, Sony digital cameras come with Wi-Fi equipped as a matter of course. This is even the case for super-cheap point-and-shoot cameras like the Sony Cyber-Shot WX350.
- Can you use Sony FE lenses on E-mount cameras?
-
Yes, Sony’s FE lenses work on both full-frame and APS-C E-mount cameras. You just have to be aware that the smaller sensor will cause the lenses to have a longer focal length than advertised, by a factor of about 1.5x. This is also called the “crop factor”.
- Can I use Canon or Nikon lenses on Sony cameras?
-
A number of lens mount adapters are available that allow you to use lenses from one system on the cameras of another. Bear in mind that some camera functions like stabilisation or autofocus may not work when lenses are adapted in this way.
- Which Sony cameras shoot 4K video?
-
Almost all current Sony cameras shoot video at resolutions of 4K or greater – the only exceptions are older cameras like the Sony a6000, or budget point-and-shoot compacts like the Sony Cyber-Shot WX350.
- Which Sony cameras have Eye AF?
-
Most new Sony cameras use the firm’s powerful Eye AF technology, and have done for some time. Sony maintains a useful page on its website if you’re unsure about a specific model.
