Expanded Sony FE 24-70mm f2.8 G Master II Lens Key Features:
Optical Structure
The first iteration of this lens saw a complex optical pathway that enabled such a high level of image quality. It was made up of 18 elements in 13 groups, including 1 XA Element, 2 Aspherical Elements, 1 ED Element and 1 Super ED Element.
This second iteration of the lens is equipped with an even more sophisticated arrangement of lenses - 20 elements in 15 distinct groups including 2 ED (Extra-Low Dispersion), 2 Super ED, 2 XA (Extreme Aspherical) and 3 aspherical elements - all of which ensure exceptional image quality with edge-to-edge sharpness throughout the entire zoom range.
Moreover, the use of these special lenses helps to achieve high resolution and sharpness through the correction of spherical and chromatic aberrations. They effectively reduce astigmatism, field curvature, coma, and other monochromatic aberrations from your photos and video footage. As well as helping to control chromatic aberrations and reduce colour fringing for increased clarity and colour fidelity.
Bright and Fast
While both versions of this lens offer that wide, bright and impressively fast maximum f2.8 aperture, the Sony FE 24-70mm f2.8 G Master II Lens is equipped with an 11-bladed aperture diaphragm over the former 9-bladed diaphragm. This upgraded element provides an even smoother background defocus and beautifully circular bokeh production.
Of course, this constant maximum aperture offers a whole range of flexibility when shooting. You’re able to more effectively shoot in low light conditions as well as offer that enhanced control of depth of field and subject-background separation. The fact that this is available at all points along the entire focal range is hugely impressive and makes the lens an ideal choice for both video and photographic applications.
Autofocus Speed
Like most aspects of this lens, the first version was impressive as is. However, another area of improvement is the autofocus speed and overall focusing performance. This lens features 4 XD (Extreme Dynamic) Linear Motors that have an intricate construction that results in faster, more accurate autofocusing. This increased AF performance greatly benefits both filmmaking and photography, making it easier than ever before to perfect every shot with this standard zoom camera lens.
Professional Build Quality
Almost an unnecessary area of discussion - We all know Sony G Master lenses are built to the very highest of standards. But, let’s go over what’s what anyway!
This lens features a dust- and moisture-resistant design and its front lens element features a fluorine coating that repels water, oil and other contaminants while making it easy to wipe off any contaminants or fingerprints. The barrel of the lens is equipped with versatile controls that make it easier to change settings when you’re on a shoot. Combined, these external controls and its versatile weather-conscious construction make this a perfect lens for almost any shooting scenario - indoors or out in the wilderness. What’s more, this version of the lens weighs significantly less at 695g over the previous 886g.
