Expanded Sony FE 70-200mm f2.8 G Master OSS II Lens Key Features:
Exceptional Image Quality
The Sony 70-200mm f2.8 G Master Lens spoiled us with its impressive image quality and overall performance. So, what could Sony do to improve on this? Well, the Sony FE 70-200mm f2.8 G Master OSS II is equipped with a redesigned optical structure that is comprised of 17 glass elements arranged into 14 separate groups. Where this lens differs is its use of specialised lenses that optimise the image quality and sharpness. This includes one XA (extreme aspherical), two ED (Extra-Low dispersion), two Super ED and then a newly developed ED aspherical element that is specifically designed to heighten quality and deliver edge-to-edge sharpness across the telefocal range.
This second version of the 70-200mm G Master features a wide, bright and super-fast constant f2.8 maximum aperture. This 11-bladed aperture diaphragm offers enhanced control of depth of field for stunning subject-background separation, as well as allowing for exceptional low-light performance. In addition, this wide f2.8 aperture is able to produce beautifully circular bokeh effects that will elevate any photo to the next level.
Finally, strong sunlight and/or backlighting can be the bane of almost any photographer, whether you're photographing sports, wildlife or portraiture. For this lens release, Sony has developed their Nano AR Coating II that is evenly applied to the element surface. This a significant improvement on their first edition, effectively reducing internal reflections that in turn, stop flare and ghosting occurring in light-sensitive shooting conditions.
Autofocus Performance
The first edition of this lens was fast. It was kitted out with an advanced double-linear and ring Super Sonic wave Motor system that was fast and super-accurate. But Sony has stepped it up a gear with the use of not one, not two, but four XD (Extreme Dynamic) Linear Motors. Combined with its internal focusing structure, these motors and their advanced construction are able to offer even faster and more accurate autofocus than ever before. This precision is present across both the video and photographic applications and result in highly accurate images.
Optical SteadyShot Image Stabilisation
To further aid in capturing detailed, dynamic imagery when shooting handheld, this lens incorporates a tried-and-tested Optical SteadyShot image stabilization system. This works by actively minimising the appearance of camera shake to support the production of sharper images with slower shutter speeds. It can also be combined with select camera’s sensor-shift type image stabilisation to closely control camera blur. To tailor the lens stabilisation to a particular shooting style, you can move the OSS Mode switch to either Mode 1 or Mode 2. The first, Mode 1, is for more general image stabilisation that suits the vast majority of photographic disciplines. Whilst Mode 2 has been designed specifically to achieve high-end panning movements across both the horizontal and vertical axis.
High-End Ergonomics
Designated as a high-powered G Master telephoto zoom lens, the Sony FE 70-200mm f2.8 is incredibly well-suited to shooting in harsh conditions both indoors and out on location. To support pro-level wildlife photographers and those shooting fast-paced sporting events, this lens incorporates a dust- and moisture-resistant exterior design. With an array of tactile function buttons positioned across the lens, you are afforded precise control over your final image; whether that be an action-packed close-up or an expansive tracking shot.
